This minor increase still leaves Carer's Allowance as the lowest benefit of its kind. This has also increased the earning of, but not enough to match the 9.7% rise in National Living Wage. Ultimately, unpaid carers may have to reduce their hours of employment so as to not earn over the threshold and lose their whole entitlement to Carer's Allowance. Carer's Allowance must be reformed. Who is eligible for Carer's Allowance? Not every unpaid carer in Gateshead will be eligible to receive Carer's Allowance. In order to receive Carer's Allowance, you must; Spend at least 35 hours per week caring for someone. This includes aiding with daily living tasks such as managing bills and shopping. Be aged 16 or over. Earn £137 or less after tax, National Insurance, and expenses. Not be in full-time education or studying for 21 hours a week or more. Be caring for someone who is receiving the care or daily living components of specific benefits such as Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Attendance Allowance, or Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).
